Police Investigation Following Maternity Report

The report into care provided at the Shropshire Trust running the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital has now been released. This report considered nearly 1,600 incidents of safety concerns about maternity care between the years of 2000 and 2019.

The report concludes that catastrophic failures at the Trust may have led to the deaths of 9 mothers and more than 200 babies, leaving other infants with major life altering disabilities.

The report concluded that there were patterns of mistakes not being reported and investigated and therefore incidents would be repeated. The report also concluded that there was a culture that favoured natural births, with a reluctance to perform Caesarean sections, which led to numerous traumatic births and many tragic cases of stillbirth.

Many families have waited years for their questions to be answered and it is their determination, along with concerns raised by various professionals, which has finally led to this investigation taking place.

It has now been announced that the police are looking at 600 cases relating to maternity care and therefore it is likely that details of criminal prosecution will follow in due course.
