With parts of the UK reaching soaring temperatures hotter than Athens and this odds-on record-breaking heatwave being set to continue into August, isn’t it time you checked whether you are hot on legal compliance when it comes to your employees?
Whilst there is no set legal limits on workplace temperatures, recommendations are to maintain temperatures between 16°C and 24°C.
Under health and safety law employers are required to take such steps as are reasonably practicable to protect the health, safety and welfare of their employees at work, which includes working conditions. So if your workplace is heating up this summer and you want to avoid the office looking like a scene from Love Island, it is time to consider your extreme weather and dress code policies. But before you hit the send button on the internal communication, make sure that your policies are compliant with equality and health and safety law! And remember, where employees are required to purchase specific clothing, this must be reflected in National Minimum Wage calculations.
