There are over 200 different types of cancer and it is becoming an increasingly common disease with someone in the UK being diagnosed with cancer every 2 minutes.
This awful and sometimes deadly disease can be exacerbated if medical professionals do not act swiftly and take the necessary actions.
Many cancers can be treated and defeated with excellent odds if found early enough. Unfortunately, lots of GPs are ill-equipped to detect some forms of cancer. Some cancers are trickier to diagnose and have symptoms that are inconclusive. This is where it is vital to receive a referral for further tests or scans.
A delayed diagnosis of cancer can mean that life-saving or life-extending treatments are no longer an option. If a cancerous tumour has grown since previous visits to a doctor, it may then be inoperable or if it has spread to other parts of the body or developed to more serious stages, then it can been that chemotherapy and other treatments are no longer effective.
Cancer can sometimes be misdiagnosed as other, less serious illnesses. If cancer patients are delayed in receiving referrals or have their treatment or operations cancelled it can have devastating effects.
Some cancers in particular are harder to diagnose and therefore missed or delayed. These include bowel cancer, pancreatic cancer, colon cancer, ovarian cancer and stomach cancer. Often these, and other types of cancer can go unnoticed until they reach stage 4 which is why it is so important for patients to see their GP if they notice any changes and also for GPs to take symptoms seriously and understand some of the more subtle warning signs of deadly cancers.
