It is always difficult when someone close to you dies. Particularly, if you are involved in making arrangements or dealing with their estate.
In this incredibly upsetting and emotional time, you still have to think clearly and deal with important matters. Our team of compassionate Solicitors are very experienced working with bereaved family members and will be able to offer much needed support during this difficult time.
This simple checklist highlights the initial steps that you need to take after somebody dies. Of course every situation is different and there may be other areas to consider.
1. Register the Death
Contact the GP or hospital to obtain a medical certificate of cause of death, or contact the Coroner’s office to find out when you may be able to register the death. You will need to make an appointment with the registrars to formally register the death. The Basingstoke office is located on London Road and can be contacted on 0845 603 5637. They will be able to inform you of which documents and information you will need to bring with you.
2. Arranging the Funeral
Once you have registered the death you will need to take the forms provided by the registrar to a funeral director. Your solicitor will be able to make recommendations if needed. Check the terms of the Will in case your loved one had any special wishes, instructions or pre-paid funeral plans.
3. Who to Inform
4. The Estate
Find out if the deceased held a Will and where it is located. If you cannot find the Will at home or with a family member, their solicitors may be storing it.
Only the executor of the Will has authority to deal with the estate. They will need to gather all the paperwork relating to financial affairs and property they own and decide on how they wish to go about the probate process and which professionals they would like to appoint.
If you are struggling to cope with the loss of a loved one and need support dealing with the more practical aspects of death then please do not hesitate to contact our friendly team. If we cannot advise you ourselves we will be able to point you in the right direction for help.
