“Tis the season to be jolly” – but it isn’t always easy to be in the festive spirit if you have recently separated or divorced this year.

The Christmas period is traditionally a time for family, food and fun but this is not always the case for those who have recently separated from their partner. Perhaps it is the first Christmas you are spending without your children or the first Christmas without your usual routines and rituals you once shared with your ex-partner.

Feeling alone at Christmas can be tough, but here are some things to think about:

Forget the Pressure!

It is easy to get caught up in the hype of Christmas and the pressure for everyone to enjoy the festive period. Try to remove your emotional attachment to the day itself. Hold Christmas early, or late – it will still be just as special for you and your children.

Keep things in Perspective

Remember that it is OK to be sad and it is OK to feel disappointed – but a new year is fast approaching and you will not feel this way forever. By next Christmas, your life and outlook may be entirely different. Try not to focus on what has happened during this difficult period, concentrate on the year ahead, enjoy the time you have with your family and embrace the changes as you move forward with your life.

Do something for Yourself

Perhaps this is an opportunity to make changes and start your own Christmas traditions. You could go away, stay at home, volunteer at a shelter, have something completely different for your Christmas Dinner, spend it with friends, travel to see family, go to your local pub or relax with a boxset or your favourite movies. Try to look at the positives and new prospects rather than dwelling on what you are not doing this Christmas.

Use your Support Network

If you know that you will struggle to spend Christmas alone make sure you ask family and friends to include you in their plans. You need to take care of yourself emotionally, just as you would physically – so ask for support if you need it.

Getting through your first Christmas after a major life change, such as divorce, can be tough – but remember it is just one day. If you have children and family who love and care for you, no matter if you are physically with them or not, you are never alone.
