The consequences of obesity include illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. The treatment of these conditions is putting a massive burden on our already cash-strapped NHS and is taking money away from other vital services.
A recent study by Public Health England states that the NHS costs attributable to overweight and obesity are projected to reach a staggering £9.7 billion by 2050. To combat this issue changes will need to be made. Businesses are already working to reduce sugar in items such as fizzy drinks and snacks and schools are working to educate about healthy eating and exercise.
There is no doubt that the NHS is going to buckle under the strain of our ever expanding waistbands. It is clear that we are all going to have to change our own habits and lifestyles if we want to avoid being part of this issue.
To highlight the issue the girls in the Clinical Negligence team are making changes today by giving up chocolate for lent. Is there a bad habit you can kick? Or an indulgence you could give up for lent to make you one step closer to being healthier for life?
